Deep shadows in the recess of my mind
I am trapped, helpless, and alone
There is no escape

Familiar sounds no longer recognized
Laughter, joy, and love
Echoes of the past

Family and friends now haunt my dreams
Only as ghosts, fleeting apparitions
They exist no more

Life to be lived, joyful in the sun
I watch from a distance
Unreachable
