some non-terroristic articles about loneliness, that don't focus on how we are all going to die soon etc
:D

I wonder if anyone here living in the UK has noticed all these campaigns, of if they happen only in the mind of politicians

if this problem is so widespread, how comes I never ever met anyone who is lonely in person?

I read that in the list of death causes of the population in the Netherlands
suicide is number 12, not so high compared to Finland (number 5!), (11 in the US) but still pretty high, if loneliness is such a problem I wonder why there are no more initiatives.

Interesting links.

In America, this problem is definitely widespread and getting worse with each generation. Read the books "Genetation Me" and "Bowling Alone" to get a look at the subject.

I'm not sure why you would expect to know if someone is lonely or not if you meet them in person. It's not exactly like we walk around with labels on our foreheads. Also, you would be less likely to meet lonely people in person because they are glued to their TVs, their only reliable past-time. Technology is effectively separating people, and I think FB is a great example of that in action.

The lack of initiatives is quite possibly due to shame and stigma. Look at it this way... you probably wouldn't care if someone looked over your shoulder and saw that you were seeking advice about a broken arm. Would you feel the same if someone saw you seeking support for loneliness, not knowing how to get a date, being abandoned by your family, not having any friends, or not knowing how to make friends?

Technology doesn't force people to not interact. Sure is a convenient scapegoat and distraction from the human elements of the problem, though.
