We are going through a period of presidential elections in Brazil, right now. And you know what? Thank god I have no friends. Some people's opinions are often so disgusting and bigoted that being able to live free of the necessity of compromising and tolerating certain things is very liberating. To see everyone I know hating on my candidate (a socialist who is all about GLBT rights and reducing the gap between the rich and the poor) because she doesn't condone the victory of the wife-beater guy whom everyone I know are voting for, is a nauseating process. Not having to smile to this people or pretend I like them feels incredible right now. If I had friends who want our country in the hands of a thief and misogynist, I'd have to reconsider or cope with a lot of disgust for enduring that relationship. Fortunately, I don't.

Never liked what I saw when I got to know people better.

I see a lot of people who'll accept friendships with people who say sexist, racist, and other bigoted things because they otherwise enjoy their company. Not a compromise I'm willing to make. I won't expose the few people I may have at various points in my life to that secondhand. I'd die of shame if I brought someone who openly hates gays near a friend who has a gay brother where they'd have to listen to trash or something like that.

I can relate to that. Here in Brazil we're enduring a losing battle against political corruption, mistreatment of minorities and the more I see the worst candidates getting elected, the more I feel the need to distance myself from society. Let them screw themselves alone.
