Two years ago I made an online friend on another forum. I reached out to her because she was writing very depressing posts about ending her unbearable life. She's in her late 30's and has been suffering anorexia / bulimia most of her life, bingeing and purging relentlessly. Initially she wondered about my objectives, but we became quite close and personal in our discussions. We ended up following each other on instagram and spoke regularly there. Back in November she told me she was going to see a doctor about getting euthanised, as she just couldn't go on anymore that way she was and her body was in its final stages of trying to hang on. She lives somewhere in Italy and last responded to a message back in December. She hasn't responded to any further messages, and I fear she has passed away. She told me she lives alone (after living with her father for a while who was devastated about her condition and she didn't feel right putting him through that any more) in an apartment where nobody really knows her and wouldn't even realise if she passed away. I'm worried she has died alone and she won't be found until either the smell of decay attracts interest or her father tries to find her. She lives quite some distance from him and he is old and feeble. She knows how I care about her, but I can't do anything but wonder about her well-being.

Hey, sorry about your friend.
Hopefully she is not gone, but one thing you said made me think.
If her intent was to "request to be euthanized" then I believe she would have gone to Amsterdam or something and this would happen in a clinic.

Gee, that really sounds like a hard situation. If you're really concerned, you can probably find law enforcement in that city in Italy on the web, send them an email explaining exactly this with you're friends name and details on her life. They can probably locate the apartment and check.

Am thought of that shortly after writing the post and making enquiries. Thanks

I have no idea. Even if I could make contact with such a clinic somehow, I doubt I'd be given any information. I'm trying to see if I can arrange a welfare check with local police, but looks like I'll have to wait until Monday before hearing a reply.

Do other countries post obituaries like America does? Maybe google her name with obituary and see if it pops up. Not the best way to find out, but at least you would know.

Gave it a try, but nothing came up that I could make out. Anyway, I've managed to send a message request for a welfare check to police in her area. I guess I just wait to see if I hear anything back.

Yay, my friend msg'd me! She hadn't been online for months.
I hope that your friend knows that they have a great friend in you all the way across the world who worried the way you did. I hope that your friend can appreciate what a great reason for living that is.

I didn't see this post - I was going to comment but what I was going to say kind of redundant now. I'm so glad she got back to you. And, wow, you went that extra mile to check up on her - people such as yourself are a rare gem in this world these days.

I wish I had a friend like you.
