Do:
  • Explain your reasons for breaking up if you can.
  • Be respectful and listen.
  • FInd ways to take care of your feelings: Keep a journal, talk to friends, exercise, play sports, listen to music, allow yourself to cry
  • Seek counseling.

Don't:
  • Threaten
  • Have sex one last time
  • Follow the other person to see if he or she is going out with someone
  • Call unless you've both agreed this is OK
  • Break up to scare the person into doing things your way
  • Get even
  • Try to get pregnant or cause a pregnancy
  • Call names, spread rumors, or otherwise try to get revenge.
  • Isolate yourself, be alone
  • Assume being friends means you will get back together

Every relationship is different, and everyone is different. There really are no do's or don't's. It depends on the situation.
