Do you sometimes worry about someone hacking into your computer and turning your life upside down? Do you worry about hackers in general? Some people put their whole **** life on their computer. Myself, I've seen some people who put their financial info and everything on it because they think it's safe.

If someone wants to hack into my computer, I can't stop them, but all they're gonna find is a bunch of porn and gaming stuff. I've had people tell me up and down that sites like E-Bay are safe, then an old administrator of a forum I used to belong to used his credit card on E-Bay only to have his remaining cards defrauded.

When you think about it, anyone with the skill could really mess things up. What if a hacker got into a hospital's computers? They could mess up automated insulin dispensers and everything. Also, Facebook. What if someone ripped off a drug dealer or broke the law? If they see that person on there(assuming you were truthful with the info on where you live, etc. in your profile) they might be in for some trouble.

Am I being too paranoid here? I don't know about any of you, which is the reason why I'm posting this. Do you actually have no worries when online? Do you truly feel safe? Maybe paranoia is a good thing online.

God Bless.

1. Strive to be always correct with people and you won't have to navigate a labyrinth of lies
2. Do not give information sufficient to identify and locate you on a searchable website
3. Do not visit malware, or illegal, or "gray-legal" sites with the computer on which you make credit card purchases.
4. Use good care, just because some website has a field for your name, location, date of bird, SSN, it doesn't mean that you're supposed to just hand them out. Forge fake information when the information request is unreasonable (such as I don't know.. this website asking me for any private information other than e-mail).

I do for the most part. I don't save any banking information on my computer. What I don't trust and no longer use is Paypal, they are nothing but scam artists. Their system is messed up, even when they know your account has been hacked and flag it they still let charges go through. I know an alarming number of people who have had their paypal accounts hacked and money stolen. Some never to be reimbursed.

Yeah... dodgy.

I understand some people don't have the common sense to not trust them but meh. One must be aware.

While I minimize personal on-line activity as much as possible in this area, I do have a disconnected hard drive for this very purpose. Also, another disconnected hard drive for things might fall in the grey section such as missing one cd for game and needing it, and the one now which is connected 99% of the time. (Only one hard drive connected at one time and disconnect the switch as well during those times). Sata connections makes things a lot easier now.

WOW! I didn't know that for sure. I had my suspicions about services like that though. When I order games online I always use a prepaid Visa and stick with my buying site until I have reason to take my business elsewhere. So many people out there these days are just aching to rip you off. And they do. They just do it legally.

Then again, I can't see any credit card company issuing me a real one anyway seeing as I'm unemployed and live at home. Kind of makes me look like a risk.:p

It's better for you I think. These credit cards are pure evil.

I hear they take much responsibility. If I had one, I'd be pretty tempted to use it to buy the PS4 coming in November. Back when I was drinking, I was a security guard. My father was my boss and long story short, he fired me. What an awkward situation it is when the old man fires you.

I had a plan to get a Radio Shack credit card, use it to buy an expensive stereo and sell the stereo for liquor money. That had a thing at the store where the clerk can just fax a request for a card. In my case a $500 limit request.(This was before I got canned)I was refused within 2-3 hours. I went all the way down to a limit of $100. Still denied.

Do you truly feel safe?

I keep a reloadable prepaid card specifically for online purchases, instead of using one of my real credit cards. I never keep more than $500 at a time on it, so if anyone snatches it they won't get much. I also use cash at restaurants when possible, to avoid some unscrupulous soul from recording my details while the card is out of my sight.

Just a couple of extra precautions to hopefully lessen my vulnerability.

And, we are not "truly" safe anywhere - just have to stay observant and do what we can to protect ourselves. Of course, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Most of the time I feel safe, I know what info I should not post. What worries me a bit is when I start searching for "x" stuff and I get carried away, open many tabs, download stuff/save images/make bookmarks, and then by accident I enter random bogus website and a .exe file starts to download.

Fortunately nothing bad happened to me, besides some really annoying toolbars that change your default search engine and home page. I hate that honeysuckle to death. Had to reinstal Malwarebytes just to get rid of it.

Isn't Malwarebytes fabulous?

Speaking as someone who studies this, anybody who can hack into a computer can really mess things up.

I'm not worried about this personally, though, because I have nothing to hide. It's not like I'm the FBI or some police agency. I write stories, create music, get on Facebook, listen to music, read books, read forums, and watch movies and tv shows, as well as play video games. It's not like I'm really a target.

If anything, I feel like the anonymity of some of my confessions on forums can bite me in the butt, but nothing other than sheer embarrassment. It's not like it's a crime that I've made the posts that I have.

It is! It finds stuff that your average antivirus does not.

What if you got into an argument with someone and they decide to exact revenge by God forbid, putting a bunch of child porn on your computer. Some ID sees this and you are in deep honeysuckle. When something of that nature happens, regardless of the proof you may have that it wasn't your fault, the stigma will never go away. There will always be those who will believe that you are into children sexually.

I do realize that irl someone could accuse you of it as well and the results would be the same, but online it's much more difficult to straighten everything out. Especially when these people use hosts or oversees servers or whatever. How do you defend against that?

Err, that's why you close and password protect your server.

I hope I don't know of anybody online who's not only that sick, but hates me that much.

It's too much of a bother to hack into people's computers since people have to work, eat, have sex... whatever.
I mean sure. There's the random risk somebody breaks into your house and not only steals everything, but also defecates on the floor, brings a colony of roaches, drill on the walls in random spots, etc. It's a lot of effort.

There's the random risk that you'll get hit by a drunk driver while walking on the sidewalk, but that doesn't mean you don't go outside.

Not necessarily. There are freaks out there.

But I remember when I was watching too much Law and Order. I started seeing criminals around every corner. Also, when I was watching too many horror movies, I expected to be hacked to pieces on the transit or something.

People generally are good. There are bad people out there, but at least 75% of the world is good. Don't let the 25% of people (rough estimate) change you.
