I'm new to the group so have been looking for a thread where I can discuss books with others - is there one?

If not, there is now :)

I'd be interested in chatting with anyone who has read The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver.

From my European viewpoint, I have the impression that she is considered a bit radical in the USA, and I'd like to hear what folk on that side of the Atlantic think of her.

The Lacuna covers a lot of ground, but tying it together is criticism of the way Western powers ignored a lot of the really wicked things Stalin did because it was expedient to have him as an ally against Hitler.

Within that framework, the book manages to cover the art and politics of Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo, the assassination of Trotsky, the Sen. John McCarthy hearings, as well as how the individual choices of 'little people' were affected by these big ideas and events.

I am very very impressed by Kingsolver's research.

Any thoughts anyone?
