Author argues that behaviour within the normal personality spectrum is increasingly deemed deviant and/or symptomatic of a psychiatric disorder:

"The stereotypical ‘symptoms’ of quietness, timidity and social withdrawal pose a significant challenge to the values of assertiveness, emotional literacy and vocal self-expression that pervade contemporary Western culture. Consequently, as shyness becomes less and less socially acceptable, the ‘shyest’ people are finding that their erstwhile deviant identities are being recast in biomedical terms and subjected to psychiatric treatment."
