Ok, my issues are many at the moment so am just taking a moment to let of steam as have nobody else to let it off too.

2 weeks ago my bathroom and kitchen flooded, I now need £1000s of work doing which hopefully the insurance will cover, but that has caused a lot of stress. The first person I got in told me I would need a lot of working doing, I said OK, send me details of the cost, and I never heard from them again so had to start all over again.

I work from home sometimes, where I see people for advice and consulting work, so the flood damage, along with the disruption that is coming, along with mice running around everwhere, has caused enough stress in itself.

The day after the flood something else happened. 2 years ago a friend of a friend asked me to do a website for them, as I've always been Ok at doing that sort of thing, though am totally self taught. At the time I was starting a completely different business/career, so I actually tried to tell this person I couldn't do it. I gave them loads of advice on how to find someone, they then disappeared but then came back and said they couldn't find anyone, or there were companies trying to charge them HUGE amounts of money to do the project. After resisting for months, I was in a dire financial situation and agreed to do the site for them for a fee, I also halved the fee, and said if they made money from the project I would take a percentage of the profits in lieu of a big advance payment.

So eventually I did the site, it was hard work and challenging, but eventually I got it all as they wanted it. I bought a commercial script and modified that as best I could, and for some more technical parts I got someone in who tweaked some parts I didn't understand. We made it a UK based site in order to overcome some technical issues but the idea was it would eventually be for an international audience.

Then for 2 years nothing happened, until the day after my house flooded and I was already going a bit stressy to say the least. I got an email from the person I did the site for saying a news agency had run into the site and done an article on it and could we expand the site to this other country as that was where the article was based and people had emailed wanting to join the site.

I looked at the site and realised that somehow since we tested it all and it went live, parts of it were broken, and also realised that I didn't really know how to do any more work on it after 2 years of doing a completely different job and not doing any web development work. So I got in touch with the person who did the tweaks for me previously who really knew the script inside out - except he's gone, no reply, his domains are all parked and web accounts suspended....

So I go to the forum of the company which sold the script in the first place. Ah, at least that's still active! So I post a message asking if anyone knows where the developer has gone, and also another thread asking if there is anyone who can help us and we are willing to pay a fee for the help.

Both my messages get deleted and the owner tells us it's not allowed to ask for paid help. I ask him if we can pay him, since he wrote the script. He says no without even asking how much we want to pay him! :club: We haven't got much, but seriously if we'd had £100,000 to give him would he just shrug his shoulders and tell us to go away? Maybe he doesn't need money.

So I post on the forum asking for help on how to try to fix the issues and make the changes myself - and get flamed for asking for free help and get told this isn't a place to just get free technical help...

So I go on People Per Hour, post a fixed price job, and bids start coming in. I get chatting to a guy, who says sure he can do everything we need, and he posts a lower price than everyone else, so I end up accepting his proposal to do the work.

THEN he says that fee isn't for the actual work as he needs to look at the site and script first, so can I send him all the login details to our FTP and database etc. So I have this guy in another country, who has bid a fixed amount and then tried to renegotiate the fee before even doing any work, and he wants access which means he could actually hack and nuke everything we've got and could even say "pay more money or we delete your sites, I've changed the passwords sucker". There are plenty of scammers out there so it's not beyond possibility. It would also be breaking the law here to let him have access to the database becasue it contains private information about members :club:

And that's where I am stuck, I can't do the work myself and whichever solution I try to come up with, I come across dead ends. People I ask for help are vague or just refuse help altogether, I can't get anyone who knows the script to help us, I can't even post on the specialist forum for help without getting flamed or in trouble with the moderators.

Ok, that's all frustrating, and my view would be what the heck, we'll sort it in the end - but the site has been going viral for 2 weeks, it's been all over the press in this country, Twitter, Facebook, it's been on dozens of news sites online, and even been featured on radio and television programmes and people are signing up every minute and and also emailing from other countries asking just when the site will be available in their country!

The pressure is mounting from the person I did the site for as they naturally want me to make the site available to these other countries, and I think for someone with knowledge of the script and coding, it would probably be quite easy, but I can't find anyone to help for love nor money and can't do it myself, and feel like my back is to the wall with a gun to my head and I simply don't know what to do next.

Sorry this is long. It's just every avenue I try to follow to fix this seems a dead end. If it's going to be this big the site needs a proper development team working on it or at least someone who knows what they're doing, and that isn't me. I have work I need to keep doing to keep paying my bills and at the best of times that takes up 60-70 hours a week. With the flood, the mice, and now this total nightmare of a situation with the website, I feel like I'm going completely crazy at times :( I can't see a solution at the moment :( I just want to disappear!

ETA: PS I also went back to the person who wrote the original script, told them about all the publicity the site was getting, and asked them for help again, as it would even be very good publicity for their business if this massive successful site was run using their script. Again, the answer was a flat, categorical no. WTF is wrong with these people?!

This is the website of the guy my mom uses. he is trustworthy. To build a website from the ground up he asked for 200 or 400 dollars.

But he is flexible on the price, a whiz at photoshop and other programs, and can figure out concepts he doesnt understand like they are nothing.

he is 16 an hour but he may raise his price to 19 or 18 an hour for you.

Thank you for the response and supportive PMs - it's often this place I come to as a last resort but maybe it should be my first, it really feels like a supportive community, a family almost, but one I often lose touch with. Thanks again I feel a bit better, the problem with stress is when there is nobody around, nobody to call, nobody to just throw a different light on it and say it will be OK - I know deep down there will be eventually a solution but knowing that and really believing it can be hard.

Thank you again for the support. ((((ALL))))

I'd probably pay 25 right now lol - thank you for the link and referral, I think I need to get out of the arrangement with the PPH guy, even if I lose the fee we paid, but that's a small issue if I can get someone to help us.

This is just web development? What kind of script is it you're talking about?
You can talk tech lingo. I'm a professional web developer myself. Not sure if I can help, but if I can figure out what it is you're looking at then maybe I could give you some tips to fix it on your own?

Thank you, I'd have to take this to PM for advice really, I will let you know if I need any suggestions? That may be helpful, I may need some help and appreciate your offer.

I'm kind of locked in with the PPH guy at the moment, there may be some other solutions but have had to park it for now due to my main work.

Thanks again (to everyone who responded either in thread or PM), much appreciated.

I understand. Feel free to PM if you need anything.
I can't promise I'd even be useful, but I don't like to see someone struggle if there is something I might be able to do to help.

And just curious, but you mentioned the PPH guy wanting access, but him being able to destroy everything. Do you not have access to create new accounts with limited privileges? For work I've had to give contractors access to my databases and stuff before and I always only give them a limited access account with only read privileges on old tables. I sometimes allow them to create new ones, or just give them their own database to play with separate from my own, which they could copy data over, if they choose, and modify it that way.
I don't know anything about not legally seeing the database, though. HR handles that stuff for me, and to my understanding they always just sign a release.
In any case, he sounds like a scammer to me. Does he even have any legal right to say the bid wasn't for the work? Then what was the bid FOR then? For me I would instantly shut him down for that and get a new bid, but again I have HR for that stuff, I guess. Just my perspective, though. I don't know any more than just what you've said about the situation. I may not have all the info to make that kind of conclusion.

Thanks DM - I can do the thing with setting up a test account etc, but with everything else going on and busy workloads I just haven't been able to find time yet to sit down and set that up, as I need to be in the right frame of mind and be able to do it (otherwise I end up starting it late at night and then end up fiddling until 4am which then doesn't leave me in a good state for my day job!). It might just seem a simple job but if I try to do such things too quickly I sometimes miss an important step which leads to problems later (eg making sure I don't use the same password for the test account as the real one, and that kind of thing!).

The guy on PPH has been very responsive and had some OK reviews and does seem to know what he's talking about, so I will try to find time to set up the test account and then if he can do what we need will cross the real database bridge when we get there!

Thanks again for your support! There should in theory be solutions, it's just that it's happened at a particular point in time when there are so many other things to sort (eg insurance have been very helpful, but what I thought would be a quick call took an hour and then I have to find time to book the next person to come and fit around day jobm etc etc!)

That sounds like me! I completely understand.

That's good. Hopefully he won't be anymore of a jerk than he already has and will cooperate once you get it set up.

Again, I completely understand! Things like that always seem to happen at the very worst times, at least for me anyway.

Hope everything goes well and you can find some time to de-stress.

Thanks again DM, more delays with insurance but hopefully I will get some rest this weekend and am at least going to a Meetup which will get me out!

Oh for heaven's ******* sake. Second time I've started writing this.

I've created the test FTP account and directory, I've created the test database, that's all fine. I've copied all the installation files to the test directory.

I tried to run the install.php and it said I already had an instance of the script installed.

I almost went crazy then realised I hadn't edited the config.php file (so a bit like wordpress, you need to edit the database name and password for a new instance) to change to the test directory, so I've done all that, reuploaded the **** thing, and it still says I have an instance of the script already installed and I need to delete config.php.

Can't think of anything else.

The owner of the script advised me to install a new instance of script in subfolder of licensed domain, which I have done.

As with all IT things there may well be something simple I have missed which a more technical person would spot in a moment, but I currently can't see it.

This is why I changed career a good while ago and am much happier with what I do these days.

I will keep looking, usually it's something stupid I've missed, but I am using my Friday night drink wine and unwind time because I really don't have any other time to even try this.

And before you suggest, I would be as clueless whether drinking wine or not, in fact it usually improves my efficiency.

I'll keep working and try the forum where the script owner advised me, to see where I am going wrong.

The frustration is that someone expert could see immediately the problem a bit like in my current job I am the expert - my current work I find effortless, this fixing IT stuff is horrible for me which is why I avoid it - as usually as soon as I start to play around, things go ***** pear shaped :( Until I can sort this aspect of the problem I still have no way of showing someone else what needs doing so they can possibly sort it out for us - on our test account.

I can't even get the test account to work.

It's frustrating, but thankfully, my view is so what - I am doing my best and if I can't do it then I can't do it. I can't do any more and to be honest nobody is going to die if this doesn't get fixed so **** it!

Ha, you see - next logical step.

Unfortunately the script doesn't work like Wordpress (of which I have done dozens of intalls and sites on). Only the installation script can write to config.php so I have spent ages trying to edit config.php when the only solution was to delete it altogether.

That's an hour spent realising that deleting a crucial file to the site was necessary and multiple edits in notepad2 were just a total and complete waste of time!

This is why I ****** hate this sort of thing.

Didn't even post to the forum, just figured it out, suppose I will eventually figure it all out but I just don't have the god **** time for this trial and error!

Oh FFS - now I've just spent another frantic time because although I made the user and I made database, I forgot to add the user to the database so the installation wouldn't work after I'd sorted all the other problems.

Or for problems read basic crap that someone doing this daily would just do - I don't do this daily, so it's like someone doing my job who has never done it before, this is why I get damned stressed from it, whatever I do doesn't work, it takes hours to just get from A to B, and this is just to sort basic crap, it's like someone trying to get from their house to the stationa aross the road and just every simple thing from getting out of the door to negotiating the kerb just turns into a complex problem.

Sorry, to a proper developer this is pathetic, but once I was just a person who learned a bit about how to do websites, then everyone expected me to know exactly what I was doing, and before I knew it I was totally lost as people stood over me expecting me to do things I had no clue whatsoever about!

I think I have finally installed it, and it seems such a small thing, but am proud of myself to have figured out so many problems and steps and found the way forward,

I just wish I didn't have to spend hours doing the wrong thing before finding the right thing.

Here we go, I've installed it, it all loads when I type in the URL.

However when I click the links in the admin panel, the links go to completely the wrong destination, although I put the correct urls/paths in when I was installing the script, when I click them in the admin panel, they just go to an error page.
Again, this isn't the real site, it's just a test site, I've spend all night on it and I end up withi absolutely nothing.

I just cannot do a ****** thing right!

Sorry I am just totally and utterly fed up with it :(

I think I have finally installed it, and it seems such a small thing, but am proud of myself to have figured out so many problems and steps and found the way forward,

I just wish I didn't have to spend hours doing the wrong thing before finding the right thing.

And now I have what I think is the site as it is, so I can hopefully show a developer without ruining the privacy of our database, but this is only a guess.

I have no idea.

Again, this is all so I can show someone else the problem we have, in order to get help. It's a total mess, all this is to try get someone else to look at the problem and hopefully help us.

This is such a waste of my time the night is growing longer,

I am so bloody goddamn frustrated with this :(

Here we go, I've installed it, it all loads when I type in the URL.

However when I click the links in the admin panel, the links go to completely the wrong destination, although I put the correct urls/paths in when I was installing the script, when I click them in the admin panel, they just go to an error page.
Again, this isn't the real site, it's just a test site, I've spend all night on it and I end up withi absolutely nothing.

I just cannot do a ****** thing right!

Sorry I am just totally and utterly fed up with it :(

Sorry I am just totally and utterly fed up with it :(

Exaclty why I was scared of approaching it and didn't want to touch it, and here I am with exactly the rubbish that is just destroying my mind, it isn't like I was scared of an outcome that wasn't likely, I was scared of this and here I am with my fears turned completely to reality, I get every single step wrong, WTF...

Am grateful I at least can vent here - but everything, every step, I am struggling like ****

I really am sorry about and embarrassed for my ranting ramblings in this thread.

I seem to have exhausted every option and the only solution seems to be to give it someone else to develop from scratch.

I'm done with it for now!

Oh dear... I wish I had some really good things to add but I'm sorry I don't and I'm sorry you're frustrated about all this. I do hope that something good will happen soon. :s

Thanks LF - it seems to be the trivial things that get under my skin for some reason!

I am not going to do any work at all of any kind until Tuesday now, so am just going to rest (and maybe go and throw this giant umbrella in my garden back wherever it came from!!!!!!

I think you'd deserve some chill out time.. give yourself a little break.... and enjoy the sightings of Tiddles, since he doesn't stick around as much as you would've liked him to. That ought to relieve some stress, I suppose.

Am feeling generally better but probably burying my head in the sand. The mice have disappeared, since I murdered one of them, perhaps they got the message I meant business.

The stress continues though - just silly things. On Saturday I booked a weekend away in a few weeks to mark the anniversary of a past major bereavement and a current loss in my life and to get some of that chillout time - and when I was booking the train tickets, the site I was using kept declining my credit and debit cards, so I tried 3 different ones several times, none would work, but all the cards are fine - I went to another site and paid no problem, but today found out every transaction has gone through on all the cards and now listed as approved transactions. I'd already emailed the site to ask what was going on but they didn't reply, so have just escalated things as have realised my bank is overdrawn because of the extra transactions, and a credit card has bounced its limit, which might leave me with penalty fees and and loss of my interest free purchases deal. I really don't know what happens in that situation but I should think the train tickets site would have to refund me and the card companies would have to acknowledge I wasn't at fault...

it's just another thing to try to sort out, has never happened before!

Oh well, I will soldier on!
