Yep. Get busy doing stuff. It doesn't matter what.

Why SSA

The US politicians have been turning the US into a Socialist country at an ever increasing rate. They are devaluing the dollar by spending $Trillions that we don't have. They can't borrow enough so they create this money out of thin air. They are paying people more not to work then if they actually worked. There is so much fraud going on. But the government doesn't care. They just want to devalue the US dollar. Millions of people seem to be a victim so the US government just keeps giving them money. They have also been stealing money from savers by artificially keeping interest rates extremely low since 2008.

They started constantly tossing out $billions back in 2008, Quantitative Easing, as an experiment to hopefully keep our banking system from collapsing. They liked it so much they never stopped it. The idea is to flood the market with cash to keep Americans buying crap they don't need. Now the US can't stop injecting $billions and $billion into the economy without it collapsing. A large part of our economy depends on the new fake money. All one has to do is take a look at the US government's balance sheet, the one they proudly display on their own website, to see we are so far past broke, including all of our assets even our military, that we should be in despair.

If we weren't the number one reserve currency we would be bankrupt like other countries have done in better financial shape then we are in. Their thought is as long as they keep the stock (fraud) market appearing strong people will believe the US dollar has value. To my amazement they just keep spending more to keep economy from blowing up. That's the number one sign that a country is headed toward currency collapse. But, we'll probably go through a few cycles of stagflation and even larger mass spending before the rest of the world realizes we are so far gone it's time to bail on the dollar.

All this money injection causes inflation. It is not as obvious as it should be yet because there are currently more supplies then demands. All the people getting their minimum wage increased will see no net increase. Health care costs have ballooned beyond reasonable. Cheap cars and truck are stupid expensive now. Home prices and rents have skyrocketed. Education is super expensive. All the prices have been increasing. Yet, the government states there has been little to no inflation. Sometimes their "experts" even say there's been deflation. That's the green light to spend even more.

Everybody is, and will be even more, feeling the effects of these increase costs. People's money will not go very far unless they are wealth. All of this spending will further the gap between the wealthy and the not. The very low will be brought up a little tiny bit, with continued government support, and the higher low to middle are being brought down. The point at which it is better not to work keeps getting higher. So, more people will choose not to work. It's just not worth the effort. That is just some of the effects of a socialist country.

And to keep the users that like to bash others at bay, I'll stay on Topic by saying, It's best not to think about all that is going on. It's best to be like most Americans, ignore the problems, and help that they go away even though the solutions being used make absolutely no sense.

^I'm not a fan of nor an expert on socialism but I'll never understand why many Americans essentially define socialism as "the government spending money/doing stuff". You are correctly identifying many symptoms of your ill system, but the diagnosis is still all wrong. It's like you never heard of socialist principles such as "He who does not work, neither shall he eat". They were even effective in the German Democratic Republic until the reunification (my parents were born and raised there). Men and women alike had to work, no stay-at-home moms and no typical welfare state. You could not "choose" not to work under socialism.

PS: Oh God, what have I done. I thought this was the "What are you thinking right now?" thread.

When I don't want to think too much, I listen to calming instrumental music or play a low-effort game. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I do get tired of thinking about the wrong things too, but being engaged in some big issue discussion also helps and I'm being somewhat productive in the process. See, like that thing I just did up there by accident. Whoops.

The old rules of socialism include the, "if you don't work, you don't eat." That's not part of the modern day rules. Besides, the US is in the midst of turning socialism and we never do things all the way. Instead the politicians pick and choose which parts and pieces benefit them and their constituents. The easiest way to control people is to make them dependent on you. So, government subsides continue to flourish and expand.

Generally, socialism means central control. Control being key. Goods and services are partly or fully regulated. The economy is planned out. This is what the politicians have been doing more and more. They are trying to plan out and control how every thing works including the stock (fraud) market. The US not only wants complete information on all of its citizens but everybody in the world. One current example of socialism in the US is that they are trying to do away with fossil fuels and are pushing alternative energy. They have been subsidizing solar energy big time for more then a decade even though it cannot replace fossil fuel energy. Texas has been a recent example of that. They switched to heavy wind reliance. Most of them have spent a week+ with no power during record cold temperatures. That's what happens with reliance on "green energy."

Capitalism, on the other hand, is free market. Free being key. The market decides how things are going to be run. Typically less expensive ways dictate the ways. The government is in the background paving roads, building national infrastructure, and protecting the country, as the US should be doing IMO. If oil becomes expensive and solar is cheaper then solar would become more dominate. Either way, the market would decide not some out of touch with reality politicians.

Firstly, I'm not sure you understand what socialism is. What you're describing is closer to crony capitalism, or in the case of energy policy, responsible government responding to imminent environmental collapse  (global warming).   You'd probably consider the majority of of the developed world socialist too I'm betting, yet many of those countries outrank the US in just about every standard of living metric.

Since TropicalStarfish already decided to make a new thread to talk about "socialism" - which I'm thankful for cause I had the same idea - I'll only respond to the Texas energy business and then I'll leave it be since it requires yet another thread of its own.

20% of Texas' power comes from wind power and that took a dive during the cold weather, that is correct. But the thermal plants which provide most of Texas' power (47%) also took an even bigger dive because just like the windmills, many plants are not weatherized and there was no incentive to do that. The worst-case-scenario was surpassed, pipes froze all over the place and everything underperformed. Look at these nice charts. Furthermore, Texas runs its own isolated grid and is not subject to federal oversight and is largely dependent on its own resources (according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration).

I find I have a bit of an opposite issue. The more distractions I have, the more I get lost in my mind. Especially at work. I guess because most of what I do is so routine, that I do not need the thinking space to complete the tasks as much. So that leaves me wide open to thinking.

Last night, I turned off all distractions, placed pillows on my bed in a couch fashion, and watched a movie. It's the first time, in many years, where I just focused on a movie and didn't use it as background noise. It was wonderful and my mind was quiet.

I know how you feel Kristina. Sometimes I get lost in bad thoughts and "why's"...leads to self-doubt, depression, lack of confidence...it's very difficult to climb out of that hole.

What works for me is art. I was never able to draw or paint my whole life. I started to follow some you tube tutorials in 2017 and I was able to really focus my mind on what I was doing in that moment, it's called mindfulness, staying in the present. After 4 years of practicing, I'm finally seeing how good I am and when I start a drawing or painting, I'm able to focus on what I'm doing 100% and enjoy it. It keeps the bad thoughts away. Lately with my marriage in shambles, I've been producing a lot of art!

Another thing I do often is guided meditation. I'm not one who can sit quietly for 5 minutes and just breathe and let my mind empty of thoughts. I need a guide to help me focus on other things for a while, I find it helps too. There are lots of free guided meditations on you tube as well.

“A“ for knowing about and energy mess in Texas, A+ for writing the post. If we all knew facts as they are, opinions woul change. Unfortunately splintering of news sources and the volume of information available is keeping us further and further from consensus and real solutions.

i havent done it completely well, but ive been able to somewhat maintain not thinking about my own life.
its a combination of working all the time and doing exercise..ofcourse chores are still work so theres that too.
finding someone to talk to. be it random people on the internet or a friend.
its not a fool proof thing though.
just try and find things to keep you busy.

Maybe you can try meditation. I find it very difficult to quiet my mind so I use mantra meditation which at least gives the monkey in my head a wheel to run on and keep her busy. I used to chant the Mahamantra (Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna...) But nowadays I find more peace in the Jesus Prayer (Lord Jesus Christ Son...). There are many Buddhist mantras too or you can just repeat an affirmation (I'm worthy of love and respect...). I find that the amount of syllables needs to work with slow breathing so that it's actually relaxing to the nervous system.

You could try something that brings mindfulness to mind and body unity like Tai Chi or yoga?

You don't have to be a slave to that monkey mind 🙉🐒
