Numbers - Names for beats/pulses

I believe numbers started out as names for beats/pulses. It was started as naming sound specifically pulses. For example if you hear a heart beating you can just listen to it and not keep track of how many heart beats are beating. But you can also keep track of the beats by counting or what I like to think of giving names to beats. first pump you hear when you start counting One, second pump Two, third pump Three and so on.
