You'd have to put a gun to my head to get me into a church ever again.

But, I very much like depictions of God as other than the spiteful fire-and-brimstone character
who would inflict unspeakable torture for all eternity for the slightest infraction.

For instance, I really liked the short-lived JOAN OF ARCADIA series where God appeared as every day people to Joan (portrayed by Amber Tamblyn)
and asked her to perform tasks for Him/Her. Joan was a snippy teenage girl who was often sassy to the God character.
But "God" always just shrugged her off and patiently waited for Joan to do as she was told.

I get choked up every time I hear Joan Osborn's "One of us"
(Sadly, Osborn declared that her career was over, and described the song as "fresia awful" when it was used as the theme for JOAN OF ARCADIA)

Also the movie OH GOD! With George Burns as God,
always with this grin that told you that he'd seen it all before, and could see the humor and irony of the human condition.

Morgan Freeman in BRUCE ALMIGHTY playing the part of God, a maintenance man.
(But I just can't stand Jim Carrey)

Anybody got any other shows or movies where God appears as "one of us?"
