This is another reason why I think the cultural shift towards hyper-individualism, is bad. I feel like this is what's causing all of these problems.
It's also why, lately it occurred to me what bothers me about a lot of conservatives/Republicans/Libertarians -
a lot of them are hyper-individualists, and also, a lot of them are egotists too. They are for hyper-individualism because they believe they are inherently stronger/smarter/better than everyone else, so they want survival of the fittest because that's what they think will benefit them the most. Hyper-individualism and egotism/cockiness/cold and aloofness/a sense of smug superiority/etc., seem to go hand in hand.
I've never been able to relate to, or like, egotists, because I've never felt like I had any justification for being an egotist myself. I never felt like I was better than anyone at anything, or at least not enough for it to really make any difference. Instead I found myself insulted and treated contemptuously by hyper-individualists/egotists, so I've always disliked them because of it.
Also I thought egotism was morally wrong, like even if you are stronger/better at something, it was supposed to speak for itself and you weren't supposed to brag about it, because one it's rude, two, you can lose physical strength/money/whatever else at any time, and three, if you have to act all cocky about something it makes you seem like you're actually insecure about it.
And I thought the whole point of civilization was that together we were greater than the sum of our parts, we could accomplish more together, and have a better quality of life together. I thought it was more advanced than "every man for himself".
At least part of my desire to be good at something, is a desire to prove them wrong about me, and in doing so, to tell them to piss off once and for all.
(PS - Don't get me wrong, I think the Democrats have their issues as well. I feel like their problem is, they say they're for the little guy, but that's it, they just say it. Then they turn around and do the same things the Republicans do, just not as extremely.)
