I'm not talking about hard core gambling... I know it can & has turned into a problem for some people... But I'm referring to casual games for fun, like most people play... I do enjoy going to casino once in a while... I'm not too big on machine games, slots & video poker & such... But I do like playing poker... I go 2 - 3 times a month & play in a tournament, usually $40 - $80 buy-ins... I've cashed few times, never that much but just enough to may be have a dinner & pay few bills with... Most I've won in the tournament was $850 for finishing 3rd place... Anyone else enjoy going to casinos or occasional gambling?

I have never understood gambling. Why take any chance at all with something as valuable as money.

I really like going to the horse track. I feel like I have more power when betting on horses. :)

I been playing poker with my family and friends since I was 6 though.

I guess you can look at it in few different ways... Some, including myself, see it as an entertainment like going to the movies... I mean, what's the point of paying to see a movie? You're paying money to watch people act out in a made up story? Then what? What have we gained by watching a movie? And I'm not talking about those educational or historical movies... And even then, why watch educational or historical movies when you can just read about them? You gotta sit there for 2 - 3 hours to do what & end up with what? How about bowling? You pay money to throw a ball at some random plastic pins trying to knock'em down? Sounds little silly... How about golf? Yeah, grown people whacking away at a small white ball with a metal stick... That sounds fun... What's the point of going to sporting events to watch? Same concept... It's one thing to participate in one... I guess someone can argue that it has health benefits... But just to go & sit on a bench with few thousand other people to watch 9 guys chasing after a ball - case of baseball - or over grown men chasing after pig skin rapped ball - in case of football... How sadistic do you have to be to be willing to pay money to watch people get beat up in sports like boxing or any type of full-contact sports...? Yeah, watching bunch of people driving around the circle sounds fun, like in Nascar racing, doesn't it? I'm not saying that's how I feel & I'm not trying to start an argument here but I'm just saying argument can be made for just about anything we do, including entertainments... I guess everyone's idea of being "entertained" is different...

This is it exactly. Not all gambling is 100% chance while you sit back and do nothing. There are many forms of gambling that let's you participate. If you enjoy it, then the chance that you might come out with more money than when you entered is just a perk. You get the entertainment for your money's worth whether you win or not.

... scratch cards? One time I won £40!!

I'll buy a $2 scratcher every now and then. I think the most I've ever made is $20, and most of the time I'll either break even or win nothing. I only buy one every few weeks, though.

That's about the most I'll do in terms of gambling. I'd never risk more than a few bucks, so real gambling is out.

My cousin bets on football every week, he only ever puts £1 on and picks loads of teams to win, loose, or draw, I'd say he wins about £20 ~ £30 twice a year at best, but still he does it, and for the money he wins he probably is still in the red at the end of the year.

It makes me laugh since he says he's gonna win each time, and on the rare occasion he does he adds " I knew it, I told you!". Yeah... well done.

Scratch cards are ok... I think I've bought 3 of them in my life time... I don't like betting on sports because I don't like the feeling of betting on something & not having any control over the outcome... I like playing poker because at least I can minimize the mistakes... Having to lose the bet because of someone else's mistake doesn't really appeal to me... Speaking of playing cards, I bought in for $80 last night at a poker tournament... I finished 5th place out of 176 players & won $286... It took a while to get there... It started out at 7 in the evening & by the time I got knocked out, it was little after 2 in the morning... And I had to be at work at 8 this morning... I didn't get home till 3:30 in the morning & I think I fell a sleep around almost 5... Man, I'm tired...

Lottery a few quid a week.
Grand national - I always win
A few golf tournaments a year, a couple of quid.

I enjoy the game poker and I kind of understand it ..just.
Don't have time to play it though even online.

Speaking of poker, I really didn't do good in last tournament, not the one I mentioned above but I mean one that I went to about 4 days ago... Out of 194 people, I finished 117th, lol... I had a bad-beat... I have tomorrow off so I'm thinking about going to a poker tournament tonight, around 10 pm... It's $65 buy-in & depends on how many people show up, I should be able to finish pretty decent... Last time I went to something like it, 194 people showed up so I'm expecting similar turn out... I'm hoping to finish above 5th place this time...

I've never had enough money to gamble. I don't see anything wrong with it necessarily as long as it doesn't become an addiction or a compulsion. But at the same time I've also always felt that you should never gamble more than you are prepared to lose, and I've never been in a position to throw money away.

I've put 3 bets on the World Cup, got useless teams in the first two but the last doesn't get revealed until it's over. Not huge bets, I don't do that.

When I was a teenager, I used to phone William Hill and Ladbrokes to put small bets on the horses. I phoned Ladbrokes and put on a £1 Lucky 15 for that day. You pick 4 horses and then it's 15 separate £1 bets - 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a fourfold accumulator. It's never likely to pay off, but it gave me an afternoon of enjoyment.

Anyway, they informed me that because it was my first bet on Ladbrokes and had staked over £10 I was entitled to a free £10 reverse forecast (Pick both first and second place finishers in any order) on the Tote Ebor that afternoon. I hadn't had a chance to even look at the form or anything, so I just said "OK, I'll have Hasten To Add and Admiral's Well". I won very little on my Lucky 15, but the reverse forecast came in and I won £315 from the free bet :)

I felt so rich... :D

I know poker. The only reason why I don't play it regularly is 'cause no one here understands the game. Poker is awesome. I used to play with my dad and bro, we actually placed bets and whoever won took the prize. It's a really nice game

I remember long ago, when i used to go to England for the summer holiday with my family, you had these child casino thingies? No idea what they are, just like casinos but without an age restriction so that i could enter. I loved it to bits, and always looked around if i could find one.

You mean an amusement arcade? Was it full of fruit machines? Stick in money, press buttons, match 3 reels, win money? They're not supposed to let anyone under the age of 18 play the machines, but I don't think anyone ever takes any notice.

^I was thinking Rosebolt is referring to the arcade as well.

Can I tell you guys a secret?
I have never been to an arcade before.. and have never played any of those things in it.

I have such.. deprived childhood. :S

Poor Lady F! I spent half my childhood and all my family holidays spending hundreds of pounds in amusement arcades, but I spent it all on game machines rather than gambling machine.

Listening to the evil laughter coming out of a Kung Fu Master machine still makes me smile.

"Blue warrior shot the health"
"Green wizard is about to die"
"Save keys to open doors"
"Red elf is it!"

Good old 4 player Gauntlet games with 3 complete strangers. Apparently, I must've been outgoing once!
