I went to a Social Anxiety group in Derbyshire and they were the nicest group of people i've ever met,I suppose because straight away we had some common ground which helped. I have never tried Meet Up. I don't think I could roller disco,I would be all over the place, sounds fun though.

Yeah I've never roller skated before - in my head I think it'll be like this:

but I think it real life it'll be like this: ;)

Had another successful meetup yesterday, went to the Bull Ring center and ended up in a coffee place having a lovely chat with a nice group of people - some familiar faces and some newbies too. The weather was foul but we didn't let that deter us.

Next month I am meeting another group of people from a different Meetup.com event so that'll be fun - I'm hoping the skills I've picked up with socialising with this group I can carry through to the next. And the next, and the next, until I can finally be free of this overwhelming shyness and isolation. The only way is up :)

I'm now signed up to more events with the social anxiety group, as well as meeting the main Birmingham Social group who do all sorts of things from Badminton to 007 Themed Nights which I'm really looking forward to.

So for all the lonely folk out there I rate and recommend meetup.com as it's a free, no scam way of meeting new people. I hope it helps somebody :) :)

Yes, this is the response I usually hear from people who give meetup.com a fair try. Congrats!

I'm going to try a French meetup soon. I really want to try it but I'm so nervous. My French isn't anywhere near perfect. Maybe I should stick to a meetup for lonely people.

Don't be nervous. It's called meet up for a reason. Meeting other people is the main purpose for which most people attend. There are clearly more lonely people than any of us realize. I've attended language groups, and you really don't need to be good or even know the language to attend. It's great that you're wandering out of your comfort zone. Don't worry, it'll be fine :) Good luck!

I have looked in to meet up here where I live in London and hardly anything seems to be going on compared to other places,I know someone who has recently started using meet up for the Nottingham area and there seems to be a lot more going on and it's going really well for them. I think I live in the wrong area.

Not much going on at my place, either. (I live in a dull place anyway). I gave it a try today, haven't signed up for any groups yet though. I just wanted to check it out, etc.

Meetup is also very useful when you are going on vacation alone and want an instant group of friends to do fun things with. You can plan out your whole vacation just like a tour operator.

That's awesome. I'm glad it was a success and I hope things continue to improve for you. =)

Thanks :)

Had another successful meetup today, playing pool and a meal at a nearby bar, made a few new friends and found an area of my city that I didn't know about so it's been doubly successful. I've found a cool bar I can go and do my writing in (I much prefer writing out in public as it gives me loads of inspiration being around lots of different types of people)

Meetup.com updates - been to a Street Theater festival with them and going clubbing with them on Saturday! Made some good friends that I talk to on Facebook when we are not together.

It has worked for me. 100%. It's been utterly amazing and cannot WAIT to see what happens or who I meet next! :D :D

I'm very inspired reading through this thread. I've been nervously debating meetup.com for a while now.

I'd encourage you to give it a shot, if you're prepared for all the possible outcomes at least. Good luck!

Wow it's amazing Hedonist! I went to 7 time to meetups then stopped; the anxiety I get when the time approach to go is just killing me, building up, sometimes a few days prior the actual date. Your post encourage me to try again. Weirdly I can't get myself to go to any Introvert meetups. Instead I decided to realize a dream and learn to play the violin.

Further meetups, I've been to Comic Con (and Cosplayed so that was a massive step forward with my Social Anxiety - people wanting their photo with me because I went as Reno from Final Fantasy 7) I've been to Botanical Gardens, Museums, bars and clubs, markets and even a chocolate festival!

I've now branched out from the Social Anxiety group to a mainstream one, where I have been to a French restaurant, and am down to do a torchlight walk, rock climbing and volunteering to help the homeless in 2016.

Meetup rocks! :D
