On The Train

As you say your byes and your see you laters,
I can already feel her arms around me, comforting me; smothering me.

The train sulkily ploughs on homewards whilst we sit alone in silence. I gaze at the blurry landscape,
seeing nothing and everything.
My feelings are the same – a junkyard of fragments.
She answers my trembling sigh with a vague smile because this is how it’s meant to be
and somehow, the closer she holds me, the colder I feel and the further away the world becomes,
as though I’m looking through hundreds of dirt stained windows and not just the one.

This train terminates. There’s the slowing of mechanical clunking.
It is all in slow motion now.
My brain is insulated and my veins pump indifference.
