I'm not fan of basketball player Lamar Odom (I hate the L.A. Lakers, sorry to the Laker fans out there!) but after reading this story I was reminded of how it can be A Lonely Life for anyone-

http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/article39334791.html

In a nutshell (if you're not in the US), a retired professional basketball player checked into a Nevada brothel over the weekend by himself on an open-ended reservation, apparently did some cocaine and used "herbal Viagra" and is now in a coma and on life support and it's not known if he'll live.
I have a visual of a man who has (or had) everything at his feet and at his disposal but wound up alone and miserable, on a ranch with a bunch of strangers who may or may not have had his best interests at heart. Sad.

After reading the title of this thread all I got to say is that Odom is not dead yet and luckily for him there is a small sign of improvement.

I hope the guy does make it, if only for his family's sake.

Setting aside the various stories about his present physical condition, as I stated in my OP, he must have been in a desperate and lonely spot to find himself virtually alone, surrounded by a bunch of strangers who may or may not have had his best interests at heart and winding up in hospital in a coma. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

The guy spent $75,000 to go to that brothel. They make sure you are not lonely when you are there. They looked after him good. For 75 grand they better. Someone just gave him too much at one time.

It is a sad story, hopefully he will recover. It makes you wonder sometimes if success can be dissapointing to some people when they have achieved it, because they are not sure of where to go from there. Or after some sports people peak, they struggle with that, and if they don't have many loving, caring people around them it probably is such a lonely time.

Oh really? You have a warped idea of what it means to look after someone good. Ending up face-down and unconscious in organ failure with blood and mucus coming out of one's nose and mouth - I wonder who was "looking after" him then.

You have confused lonely with being alone. Two different things.

Let's pedantically argue on my thread about this man's state. I'm here all night, love.

It is a shame, but this happens every day. I honestly don't understand why people rush to fall over and be surprised, support/pray/whatever just because the person is a celebrity. They are no different from anyone else. Yes, they are in the public eye, but that doesn't make them any better, IMO than the person down the street that no one has ever heard of, that died or almost died of an overdose.

A guy I went to high school with overdosed on cocaine a few years ago, I know he wasn't lonely, he just messed up and took too much of the wrong kind.
My point with that is that you can speculate all you want, but you can't know he was desperate or lonely. He was likely addicted and just took too much. (like BeyondShy said) I'm not saying he wasn't lonely or wasn't desperate, I'm just saying that you can't really know why he did what he did. I don't buy that people do drugs because they are lonely, that's just an excuse. People do drugs because they make the conscious decision to do so (the majority of the time). They might use excuses to justify it, but in the end, they do it because they want to.

You can say it is an "excuse". Nobody is "excusing" what addicts do. Yeah, it is a 'choice' to some extent. Most of them are trying to numb the pain they deal with on a daily basis. Yes, that isn't the right way to do it. But, for some it is the only thing that brings them even brief periods of relief from their own mental anguish. This kind of anguish is real. Yeah, everyone should Man up, suck it up, etc. On some level, maybe he was even trying to die. But, it is just so sad to see vibrant people snuffing out their own lives. And, no I don't blame the Kardashians. The pressures of their lives may have gotten to him but he was already a famous person so not like he didn't understand the fame aspect.
However, he also had the means to get help and help himself. He could have spent $75k on the best treatment in the world. But, he choose to go to a brothel and get a bender on. It doesn't sound like he is going to fully recover. He may survive but I doubt he will be the same.

That's your visual. That doesn't mean that is what actually happened. I read that entire article. It didn't say he was alone and miserable. Or did he call you up and tell you he was alone and miserable? Now if that's the case thank you for the explanation. Look at it this way. The guy went to a brothel where you got to pay $75,000 to walk in the door. For that price they are going to make sure he is not going to be miserable.

But you are right on one thing. At the very end before the police and paramedics were called he was alone after he overdosed. Whoever was with him when he was taking his drugs got the hell out of there and fast and are not talking.

I hope he does make it.

Read my previous reply. The girls he was with kept him busy until he decided to start doing his drugs. When he became unresponsive they must have put their clothes on and went someplace else.

Sorry I couldn't oblige love. Just couldn't fit you in yesterday afternoon and evening. No offense but you are not on my top ten list.

That's the truth.

Its a miracle he is out of his coma and talking.

I have no sympathy for him though. He wanted to do drugs and go on a bender. See what happens. There are a lot worse ways to go.

You're right about everything you said. I am happy for him that he is awake and talking and I hope to God that he never comes close to doing this again.

The guy had a bad couple of days. Pays 75 grand to a brothel and didn't even get his full stay there. Who knows if they give partial refunds?... Takes too much drugs and overdoses...Comes out of his coma and the first thing he sees is a Kardashian. :rolleyes2:
