Alone in a crowd

I'm wondering if my situation is unique, or common (and nobody talks about it)

When I'm alone, I'm never lonely.
It feels like solitude to me.
I've been that way all my life.

But when I'm around people I feel totally invisible.
It's the most awful feeling.
Like that song with the line
"standing knee-deep in a river, and dying of thirst"
People everywhere, and so so cold.
Where I work, I'm never included in going out to lunch.
I used to ask others if they wanted to go to Taco Bell or whatever with me
but I'd always get these terrified looks from them and the most lame excuses
("I need to go to Target to get some kitty litter")
I finally gave up on the people at work when I asked one guy in my dept. if he wanted to go get a burger for lunch.
He told me that he had no money, then came back 15 minutes later with take-out food. (it must have been free that day)

Any helpful comments will be appreciated.

Sounds like you work with some nasty people. Why are they so unkind?

I know exactly what you mean. And if I knew your situation more fully, I might be able to help more, but from what you said, it's hard to say what I would do. If you find that absolutely no one at work seems to want to get to know you at all, then I would just do the best you can and don't let it bother you.

If you have to eat lunch alone, so be it. Try to bring that same solitude you feel when you're alone to when you're around people. Just be at peace, and let everything else flow from that...

I'm sure you'll meet someone nice at work eventually. Keep to yourself, smile, and be friendly... someone will come your way....

I wouldn't say that the people I work with are "nasty"
They're just not interested in me.
This is the only place I've ever worked in my LIFE
where I haven't made any friends. But the economy sucks,
I'm over 50, and where would I go?

maybe changing your working environment will help?
