Long ago a weathered lady would sit by the sea
And watch the horizon with waves at her feet
From dawn until dusk to the distance she'd stare
'Till the salt of the ocean had caked in her hair
Her calloused hand and creased skin showed years of hard life
Memories of what once was play behind her eyes
Bodies entwined in a lover's embrace
A burning passion few can taste
A deeper link than most men know
The beautiful connection between two souls
Tight hugs and tears as the ship left port
But this was a love no distance could thwart
Month after month she would watch the sea's foam
Awaiting the day that her lover comes home
Her heart jumped in her chest when she spied a white sail
Beating harder when she saw the ship tattered and frail
Thirteen men walked the dock with their heads held low
She waited for more from the ship's hull below
After awhile the captain stepped out
Though his pain was evident he didn't scream nor shout
He simply walked to her side, tears hugging his eyes
"I'm sorry young lass, my hardest I tried."
The sky ripped in two as she fell to her knees
Oblivious to all she started to weep
She felt not the comforting hands on her shoulders
She knew only pain and her now broken armor
Many years have since passed, and if you ask she'll tell
"I'm just waiting for the sea to take me as well"
And watch the horizon with waves at her feet
