This is a poem I wrote a few months ago to express feelings of loneliness, as well as to empathize with those around me who have also felt lonely at one time. I would love to hear your thoughts/feedback. :)

Waiting

I gaze upon society

Wrapped up in their self-sufficient games

The illusions of give and take

Openness suggested

While the deepest tunnels remain closed

No one dares to delve further

To explore the dark uncertainties of human hearts

My heart, like many

Sits waiting on a dusty shelf

A gold nugget longing to be treasured.

I watch as couples embrace

Tell each other their innermost secrets

Explore the passages of each other’s lives

A candle lit by eternal flame.

And yet I who walk a different path

Surrounded yet lacking the same

Curl in the deepest recesses

Cries echo to the gushing wind.

“Come, get to know me,”

Is the deepest cry of my heart.

“Explore the halls of my soul,

As our voices vibrate in harmony

Let me lift you with my laughter

And wait with me in reverent silence

As my waves of sorrow lap the shore.

I may not be that ‘special someone’

The puzzle of my perspectives may not match yours

Yet I am no less a song

Longing for the applause of a deaf crowd

Nor do I desire less

The warm embrace and the melding of hearts.”

In the meantime I watch you

Hoping, wishing, dreaming, praying

For the world to lift itself

From its empty mould

And pointless fronts of intimacy

To dust off the forgotten hearts

To delve into the mysteries of humanity

Reveling in diamonds and broken glass alike.

I’m still waiting.
