If I had it my way I'd make the board entirely text based like an alt newsfeed or a bbs. I turned off sigs because too many people had huge annoying obnoxious ones. If avatars got any bigger I'd have to turn them off as well. (And if the site didn't allow it, I'd use greasemonkey scripts to make it allow it)

Whatever the resolution of avatar I'm still going to give the impression of a pretentious arse, not that I care too much, so the avatar size is irrelevant.

The problem with increasing the size is that it takes up more room on screen when viewing a page. On average you only see about 2-3 posts as you scroll. Some signatures are quite large, it can become distracting when trying to read posts. Avatars are bigger on a persons profile page anyway if it was uploaded that way.
