I have developed a loud humm in my left ear. In 2008 the same thing happened but it seemed to go away. And it seemed in my right ear. I went to the doctor this week and they removed some wax. At the appointment I was hopeful all was solved. But unfortunately, when I got home I realized it was still with me. I had a hearing test and my hearing is normal.

I can't tell you how much this bothers me. I will say I am lucky that during the workday I can't hear it. At work and on the train air conditioning systems are so loud they drown it out. But at home... can hear it. Over the TV!

My only theory and hope is that it could be related to dehydration. I have seen some suggestion on the net that not having enough water can lead to drying out of the hairs in your ear which cause a problem. That would make sense because in the last year I have been HORRIBLE on the water intake. And one of the first things I notice when I am dehydrated is that my regular hair gets thin and brittle.

Anyone else have anything like this? I might go back to the doctor but if I have normal hearing it typically rules out anything serious.

My mother has the same issue for quite some time now and she's been referred to see an ENT specialist. But it seems to only happen in the mornings she said. So we'll see what the doctor says. I think if the problem persists you should speak to a doctor about it.

I went to the ENT (who removed the wax) and an audiologist who did my hearing test. Unfortunately at the doctors office the AC was too loud to know if the ringing went away. So they told me to go home and let them know if it didn't go away. But the ENT told me that is is typically nothing serious if the hearing was ok. Which it was. In fact, weirdly with two sort of ear plugs in the ear for the hearing test... I couldn't hear it.

I think it is bizzare that so many people have it. To me it suggests dehydration because the elderly tend to get dehydrated more easily and the vast majority of people who have it are elderly. I am not at all at risk. I never use ear phones. I work in a quiet place. I live in quiet... so there should seem to be very little reason.

Sounds like tinnitus to me. I'm on a guitar gear forum and loads of the older musicians on there have this problem.

Yes, it is tinnitus. However, it seems like there are no real cures for this. That isn't great.

I have no reason to have it noise wise. I never go to clubs or have anything loud around me.
