I think you should consider what type of weather/natural disasters you want to live with. Tornadoes and/or hurricanes the south. Freezing temps and blizzards in the NY, with the occasional bad storm and/or isolated tornadoes. Earthquakes, dust storms, monsoons and wild fires in the west.
