As far as building one myself, I've considered seeking out the woodtech shop of a local high school and hiring a student to build a body for me. I'm not too great with woodworking skills, so I figure that would be the cheapest way to go. *shrug* Anyway, it would give me a unique axe.

I wasn't going to go crazy and fret a neck / shape a body or anything, the most work I would have done was the wiring and then the set up / intonation. I was going to buy a body and neck then drop a seymour duncan JB for 7 strings in the bridge P/U hole. It prices out at around $900 US tho, do I really want to spend that much on the first guitar I've ever built? I'm undecided 0.o
